What is mediclaim?

Mediclaim is health insurance that helps pay eligible hospitalisation and medical expenses, subject to the policy's terms, limits and exclusions.

When you are admitted for a covered treatment, the insurer may settle an approved bill directly with a network hospital through cashless service. In a reimbursement claim, you pay first and submit the required documents for assessment.

A

It is not a blank cheque. The policy schedule, wording, endorsements and exclusions decide what is payable. The right question is not only “What is the premium?” but “What will this policy actually do for my family?”

How medical insurance works.

You pay a premium to transfer a large, uncertain medical expense to an insurer. If a covered event happens, the insurer assesses the claim against the policy and pays the admissible amount, subject to limits, exclusions and your share.

₹1. Choose

Select cover, sum insured, hospitals and terms that fit your family.

↻2. Pay

Pay the premium and keep the policy active through renewal.

+3. Treat

Use a network hospital or follow reimbursement requirements.

✓4. Claim

The insurer verifies documents and pays the admissible amount.

The important gap: hospital bill ≠ admissible claim. The difference may come from exclusions, waiting periods, sub-limits, co-pay and non-medical deductions.

Where claims can become smaller than expected.

People often feel cheated when a genuine hospital bill is not paid in full. Sometimes the issue is poor communication; sometimes it is a clause that was present all along but never explained clearly.

01

Room-rent limits

A ₹5,000 room limit can proportionately reduce the entire hospital bill, not only the room charge.

02

Sub-limits

Specific caps for cataract, ambulance, ICU, or procedures may leave a balance even when the policy is active.

03

Waiting periods

Pre-existing diseases and named treatments may be covered only after the stated waiting period.

04

Co-pay

A 20% co-pay means you pay 20% of an admissible claim, regardless of the premium paid.

05

Non-medical items

Gloves, registration, consumables and other excluded items can be deducted from reimbursement.

06

Disclosure gaps

An incomplete health declaration can give an insurer grounds to question a claim.

Fair warning, not fear: private insurers are regulated businesses, and every claim is assessed against the issued policy. Andrew's role is to help you compare terms, ask better questions, preserve documents and challenge deductions that appear inconsistent with the wording.

A claim is easier when the paperwork is ready.

01

Disclose honestly. Share past diagnoses, medicines and surgeries when applying. Never let anyone “hide” a condition.

02

Keep a policy file. Save the schedule, wording, premium receipts, renewal notices and every endorsement.

03

Ask before admission. Check network status, pre-authorisation requirements, room limits and likely deductions.

04

Escalate with records. Request written reasons for deductions and use the insurer grievance process before approaching IRDAI channels.

Government-owned insurers worth understanding.

Public-sector insurers can be part of a sensible comparison. Their government ownership does not remove the need to read the product wording, confirm the network and understand claims rules.
